You asked me to take a picture of you.

“Make me look good”, you said.

I studied your features,

saw which smile you had that looked the best.

And as I examined your face,

you looked completely foreign to me.

Your red hair, subtle wrinkes, pink lipstick.

I couldn’t tell who you were at all.

Yet I have known you my whole life.

Have I never taken the time to really look at you?

Have I been too invested in myself to really see you?

You are my mother, and yet I feel like I don’t know you at all.

Let’s change this.
